BLEACHING YOUR HAIR AT HOME – THE ULTIMATE GUIDE | VIEHAIR COMPANY

How to properly and safely bleach my hair? How can I do it myself but still get the amazing color like I just went to a professional salon? Those must be popular questions most of us came up with.

If you are on a budget, or you want to search for a step-by-step tutorial on how to DIY, then you are at the right place. Though, there is one thing that we need to remind you of. Bleaching your hair at home is a completely complicated process, requiring utmost care if you want it to go through successfully.

Bleaching your hair is a complicated and unique process.

Some people may ask: “I want to dye my hair bright color, but I don’t want to bleach my hair. How can I lift my hair color without bleaching? My hairstylist told me that, they will only use a magical toner on my hair and it will automatically transform to a bright tone that I want but I can still keep my hair healthy and smooth.”

We can tell you that, there is no toner in the world that can do that job of bleach. If you already bleach your hair to a certain bright tone, such as blonde or brassy tone, you will need to use a toner – a type of shampoo that will remove those pigments so that you can achieve platinum blonde color. Only when your hair is platinum blonde can it be dyed extremely bright colors like neon green or smokey colors.

You will need to bleach your hair, but don’t worry, if you follow these steps, you will not only achieve the desired color but you can also know how to have smooth, silky, and healthy bleached hair.

WHAT IS HAIR BLEACHING

First of all, you will need to understand exactly what bleach does to your hair. If your hair is naturally black or dark brown, it means that your hair contains a high level of eumelanin – a type of hair pigment that contributes to the dark color of the hair. Amid the process, the bleaching agent will break down the eumelanin with oxidation, which will lighten up the hair tone.

If your hair is naturally black or dark brown, it means that your hair contains a high level of eumelanin.

Some may ask, “So, that means I can buy a little amount of bleach, and just leave it there and let it do the job, and then my hair will be bleached to the brightest tone, right?”

The answer is no. If you have had your precious hair done in a professional salon before, you will see that the hairstylists will divide your hair into parts, and then bleach your hair multiple times or combine the use of bleach with a toner. Why? Because hair bleaching agent can cause hair damage and drastic burns to the hair scalp when it is applied incorrectly or left on your hair for too long. So this is an important thing to remember when you are going into it.

CONSIDER IF YOUR HAIR IS HEALTHY ENOUGH TO BLEACH

Bleaching products, just like dye, contain ammonia and other types of chemicals. You will need to apply a small amount of bleach or dye to your skin to see if you have a negative reaction to it. If yes, you will need to go to a professional salon to get your hair done. In addition, if the reaction is so bad that you start to have allergies, then you cannot make friends with hair bleaching products.

As far as we are concerned, hair bleaching is a unique process – each person needs a bleaching method that suits themselves. There is no universal method that will resemble the well-known term “One-size-fits-all” in the clothing industry. Therefore, you should determine whether your hair is healthy enough to start the process.

Hair bleaching is a unique process.

If you are encountering any following problems about hair – dryness, damaged internal structure, and frizziness, we would recommend you leave the process to a professional hair colorist, who has the required knowledge on how to choose the correct hair products and hair strengtheners for you. In addition, there are several things you should pay attention to – You need to know how hydrated your hair is and the last time your hair was colored or bleached. If you can give an answer to those questions, it means that you can decide whether or not to conduct the bleaching.

PREPARATION

It would be best if you can prepare everything you need and put them together in one place. If you need anything, just simply grab it, and you won’t have to “Oh my, I forgot the hair clips!”. You can follow the recommended list of the items for the process below:

  •  Your favorite hair bleach
  •  Hair clips
  •  A plastic cape for hair coloring (you can also use a raincoat)
  •  Shampoo

Before the process, your hair should be dry and clean (which means you need to shower your hair last night, or before that and heat-dry your hair). It should not contain excessive oils and not be exposed to hair styling products and dry shampoo.

FYI, hair bleach can wash away the color of your shirt, so you can choose a no-longer use t-shirt to be sure if the plastic cape accidentally slips down and expose your shirt’s collar. You should also make sure that your bathroom rug is removed, so if the bleach drips, it will fall down to the floor and you can clean it up later. If you are too lazy to clean up the floor, you can place a giant paper sheet or some nylon wrap on the floor, and then conduct the ritual right on it, or just simply sit in the bathtub and have your friend bleach your hair for you.

THE PROCESS

STEP 1: Use the hair clips to divide your hair into sections. It would be best if the bleach is applied in smaller segments for each section so that it will easily be absorbed into your hair and you can avoid uneven shades of blonde/brassy color on your head.

STEP 2: You may start spreading the bleach on each section, but make sure that the bleach stays at least a few centimeters away from the hair scalp. Once the process is done, you can start applying the product to the roots. This is an important thing you should remember as the bleach will work faster on the roots as a result of your body’s heat.

STEP 3: After you have fully applied the bleach to your hair, you can leave it there for 20-45 minutes. It is highly recommended that you read the instructions of the product carefully or consult the seller on how to appropriately use the product, so you can get the desired result without severely damaging your hair.

STEP 4: When the process is done, please rinse the bleach off your hair and thoroughly shampoo your head right away.

AFTER BLEACHING

For the fact that your hair is vulnerable after bleaching, it should be treated with extra care. You can start researching hair masks or keratin treatments. A hair mask can get into the cuticles and nourish your hair from the inside.  If you want to stick with a more common method, then conditioner is not a bad choice. Shampoo less, and use conditioner more.
